3 Steps to Reduce the Feeling of Being Behind in Your Business

New Tradition- Adventure Of The Month:

For the last article of each month, I'm going on a field trip, and then will share what I learn.  I've noticed a rhythm in writing the Launcher - once a month, I get the urge to do something different.  Since I'm constantly reminding you ladies to notice your internal rhythms and follow them, by gosh I'd better do the same...

This Month's Adventure:

I'm at the top of my favorite lookout point here in Boulder, Colorado.  As I'm typing, I can see a spectacular view of the Rocky Mountains running north and south as far as my eye can see.  I like to come up here for perspective, and boy does this place deliver!

Adventure Lesson- 3 Steps To More Satisfaction In Your Business:

The mountain range reminds me of a client conversation last week about a section in my free workbook that describes the Big Horizon phenomenon for us go-getting entrepreneurial ladies.  It's that feeling of being behind when you're the kind of person who is always seeing the next big steps for your business.

You set a goal and work toward it, but by the time you have accomplished it, you don't even notice because you're already focusing on the next goal.  When you could be feeling satisfaction about the goal just achieved, you're instead feeling dissatisfaction about the next one not yet reached.  This Big Horizon skill makes you great at evolving your business forward, yet it can also produce a constant feeling of dissatisfaction - a big drain on your energy and your morale.

The Mountain Range of Satisfaction:

1)  Picture you're hiking in a mountain range (and what the heck, picture that you're in excellent shape too) and that you're just coming to the summit of a peak.  As you reach the top, you begin to see the next peak on the horizon and you get excited about it.  Now, recognize the peak on the horizon as an upcoming goal in your business.  Notice the urge to start focusing on how you're going to get there, but before you do...

2)  First notice the peak you are standing on.  What goal have you just accomplished in your business that used to be the goal far off in the distance?  Take a moment to appreciate the fact that you've reached this goal.  Before you head for the next horizon, pat yourself on the back for the energy expended on climbing the current summit and let yourself soak in the view.

3)  Now look behind you at the peaks you've already scaled.  What goals have you accomplished in the recent past that you may not have noticed because you were focused on the goals ahead?  Give these past summits a nod of recognition too.

Apply It To Your Business This Week:

As you do this quick exercise, the key is to notice the amount of dissatisfaction and drain that happens when you focus so much on the goals in the distance that the satisfaction of the past and current goals gets left in the dust.  From this perspective, you'll never be caught up.  Draining!  If you feel drained or dissatisfied at any point during this coming business week, whip up the mountain range visual and see if it can give you a helpful perspective.
